January 21, 1978 - March 12, 2014
It is with great sadness that we announce that Tony Ojiro passed away on March 12, 2014, at the age of 36.
Tony began karate in his teens eventually advancing to become chief instructor at Burnaby South Karate Club from March 2000 to December 2001. Under his instruction, the dojo grew to more than 55 members and as a result, the dojo had to relocate to larger training facilities at Burnaby South Secondary School. Members truly enjoyed attending his classes and had the utmost respect for him. When Tony moved to Japan, his students missed him dearly although they knew he would continue to train at a new level that would serve as an inspiration to his students.
Tony lived for in Japan for many years and continued to train regularly with 9th dan and chief instructor of Gima-ha Karate, Shihan Ikuo Higuchi, at his Tokyo dojo. Eventually, Tony and his family moved to Vienna to take on a new role at work.
Tony lost his battle with Colon cancer after he was diagnosed in July 2013. He is survived by his wife Junko, daughters Alyssa (7) and Emma (4 yrs), his Mother, Father and sister.
A trust fund has been set up for his wife and daughters. If you would to contribute or want more information, please contact Melissa Hance (Wong) at 778-233-7191 or e-mail. A service will be held on Wednesday, March 19 at 11:00 a.m. at Victory Memorial in South Surrey.
