The Abbotsford Karate Club began in Abbotsford in 1972. Chief Instructors have included Robert Sidoli, Joe Worley, and the current Chief Instructor, Paul Sexton (5th degree Black Belt). Our club has been fortunate to be influenced by many well known instructors who have visited and taught or given exams at our club like Sensei Hidetada Narumi, Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama, Sensei Hirakazu Kanazawa, Sensei Toru Yamaguchi, Sensei Ikuo Higuchi, Sensei Mitsunori Kobayashi, Sensei Tak Sameshima, Sensei Bino Felix, and Sensei James Johnson.
We are now at Godson Elementary School in Abbotsford. We currently have three black belts who assist in instruction: Paul Sexton (5th degree) - school teacher; Ted Gosling (4th degree) - Real Estate Agent; Vernon Shein (1st degree) -Gelogical MIning Engineer
We have had a number of our students go on to become members of the Abbotsford Municipal Police Force, the R.C.M.P. and Corrections Officers. Our current membership (ranging from eight years old to fifty-seven), has quite a high percentage of girls and women, as well as a number of families where Mom, Dad, and the children all train together. We also have a large number of strong competitors who do well at local competitions.
We stress fitness and self-defence. We do some work with traditional weapons like the Bo, Tonfa, and Sai. We also work on throws, take-downs, ground fighting, and pressure point training.
We have a separate class for the younger students (8-12 years old) from 6:00 to 7:00 on Mondays and Wednesdays. Regular teen and adult classes are on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. We train from the beginning of September (when school starts) to the end of June.
We strive to develop strong bodies and strong minds with the capacity to endure, yet showing humility and respect for others.
We develop speed and power with flexibility and inner strength. We help our students to grow, to strive without giving up, and to defeat the greatest enemy of all, self doubt.
