Gima-ha Shotokan-ryu is a traditional Japanese karate style with roots to the original Shotokan School of Karate that was first introduced to Japan by Master Gichin Funakoshi. Gima-ha in Canada, has produced a number top-level karate students, many of whom have competed at the provincial and national level; the World Karate Championships and Pan-Am games.
Our dojos are located in Abbotsford, Aldergrove, Chilliwack, South Surrey and White Rock, BC, with affiliated dojos in Japan, U.K., Germany, India, Norway and most recently Sri Lanka. The Canadian honbu (head) dojo, is located in White Rock, BC under the direction of Canadian Gima-ha organization chief instructor, Shihan Takayuki Sameshima, a 7th degree (dan), provincial coach for nationals (1980-85), national coach (1982-88) for North American Pan-American, Commonwealth and world championships. Gima-ha Summer Camp - Whistler, BC July 5-7 Register Now! Mark your calendar now for the annual summer camp in Whistler. Invite family and friends and enjoy all that the resort of Whistler has to offer. The camp runs for three days and includes specialized training in kata, kumite, self-defense and kobudo (weapons). Kobudo - Bukai news
Congratulations to Hardeep Gill for achieving his Shodan rank in Ryukyu Kobudo (weapons) during the grading test on February 23, 2013. Hardeep is the first black belt for Ryukyu Kobudo in Gima-ha Shotokan-ryu Canada. He is also a 5th degree in karate. Ben Berkiw of the the Gima-ha Chilliwack dojo, successfully passed the brown belt grading for Ryukyu Kobudo. The 2012 BC Provincial tournament was held November 17-18, at BCIT and members from the White Rock Gima-ha dojo took home a total of four medals. Read more.

The Gima-ha World Meetings were held in Hamburg, Germany August 10-12. Special classes, gradings and demonstrations were led by visiting instructors Shihan Ikuo Higuchi (Tokyo, Japan), Shihan Mitsunori Kobayashi (Niigata, Japan) and Shihan Tak Sameshima (Canada).
Annual Gima-ha Shiai Tournament
The 32nd annual Gima-ha Shiai will be held in May and hosted this year by the Chilliwack dojo. Preparations are underway and details will be posted once they become available.
